Restore the USA Military Draft, But not for War

I did not serve in the military because I was considered 4F due to extremely poor eyesight and also flat feet. However, I did go to a military school and the training and discipline I learned there was invaluable! I tried to get a commission when I was at Wake Forest University through my background in military school. I was granted two years of ROTC and would have been eligible for Officers Candidate School. It was while applying for this program that I was told I would never be allowed to serve in the military.

This was during the Vietnam War and I can understand not going to war zone. However, could I not have served in the USA as an officer training our service personnel? I could have helped state's side in some fashion.

Today, we don't have to send our young people to fight, just because we have a military draft. Why not use them through the Corps of Engineers to rebuild roads, bridges and other public construction projects? These are the age bracket that are finding no jobs available and are turning to crime in the streets. Put them in mandatory military training, like they do in other countries like Israel, where all teens and young 20s serve!

Here is a way to have them get in shape and learn discipline at the same time. They can also learn team and leadership skills.

Also, we need to do away with the Green Card program in the military that was shared by a disgusted Marine drill instructor. He told me that during boot camp each trainee was given a green card. This green card acted as a "time out" card. That meant that if you were tiring out during a particular exercise you could raise your green card and the instructor had to let you take a time out! This is absurd! These instructors are there to instill toughness and discipline not play nurse maid!

I can just see a scared young kid in Iraq or Afghanistan raising his green card up during the heat of battle and asking for a time out! That ain't going to happen! You are there to fight and save your life and your teammates!

I also mentioned in a previous article that retired military personnel like my friend Major Sam Mosteller, who trained our US Army Military Police would be more than happy to offer their drill instructor background to the Physical Education classes of American schools. Sam is principal of a Christian school in Atlanta and I will just bet you those kids are being taught discipline and how to stay fit!

So get up at your PTA meetings and ask if that would be okay for your kid's school. Find some retired drill instructor and offer him a small salary through a PTA donation program.

Getting Your Family Organized

Getting organized is not just about organizing yourself. It's about organizing your family as well. No man (or woman) can do it alone - at least not without driving themselves crazy!

From time to time, I have been asked by my clients to help them not only get better organized around the house but get the rest of the family involved in the process. It is vital that every member of the family participate in creating and maintaining an organized home.

I have worked with large families, small families, single parents and blended families. With each family comes different challenges but when working one-on-one with the family, I am able to create a plan that works.

Here are some suggestions that you can incorporate into your family plan:


HOLD FAMILY MEETINGS One of the best ways to keep the communication flowing with your immediate family members is to hold weekly family meetings. Set aside one day each week to sit around the table with everyone to discuss upcoming plans, fill in the family calendar, review upcoming family vacations, decide on weekly meals, address school issues, etc. Make this mandatory, even if your kids sigh at the thought. Keep it positive. Try to keep the meeting under 30 minutes.
GIVE EVERYONE THINGS TO DO The household chores and errands should never fall on one single household member's shoulders. Most often they fall on Mom. Make a list of everything that needs to be done each week. Then assign tasks among all of the family members. (See information on creating a Weekly Responsibility Chart below.) And remember, even toddlers can help in one way or another. The responsibilities assigned should be age appropriate. It's best to teach family responsibilities from a young age.
GET ON THE SAME PAGE WITH YOUR SPOUSE Children need consistency. If you're always telling your kids to pick up after themselves, and your spouse lets things slide and either picks up after the kids or doesn't even pick up after themselves, then your kids are going to get mixed messages. When husbands and wives make rules that they both agree upon, then the kids must adhere to them also. You will find that there will be much less resistance and frustration this way.
MAKE IT REWARDING If there's never a reward for doing something, what's the fun in that? Some families give kids allowances for doing their chores. Other families clean and organize together and then celebrate with a pizza party or a movie when everything is complete. Younger children are generally thrilled to build up "stars" or "stickers" for jobs well done. They can then turn them in for prizes, like helping Mom bake cookies or going to the park with Dad. Older children tend to work better with either an allowance or the promise to be able to do something special. It's best to build up towards the reward as opposed to taking away from the reward. Remember, keep it positive!
When I work with families, I start by conducting the first family meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to get everyone together and focused. I provide the parents with some guidelines to create a list of all of the responsibilities involved in running the household.

I help the family create a Weekly Responsibility Chart. The purpose of the chart is not only to put the chores the children need to be responsible for, but also include the parents' responsibilities. It is important for the children to see that everyone is involved in the process.

The list is then divided up among the members of the household, keeping in mind the chore or responsibility needs to be age appropriate. The tasks are then added onto the Weekly Responsibility Chart.

The next step is to create the Reward Chart. The children will be able to see, on a weekly basis, how they are progressing towards their rewards.

Both the Weekly Responsibility Chart and the Reward Chart should be prominently displayed either on a kitchen wall, in the mud room, on the inside of a door or any central location in the home. The goal is to create an atmosphere where the entire family functions as a unit.

The parents should make sure they get together with each child, one-on-one, so they can discuss which chores they will be responsible for on a weekly basis and how the reward system will work. The parents will also have their responsibilities listed on the chart. Remember, it is important for the children to see that the parents are also participating, not just giving orders. The children can clearly see what those responsibilities are.

Consistently keeping the family unit working well together takes some effort but everyone involved will benefit.

What the Eiffel Tower Teaches Us About Process

In redecorating my home office, I began looking for images for the walls that would inspire and motivate me. This needed to be more than pretty pictures of flowers and landscapes. One day I was in a book store and started sifting through a bin of art prints. Voila! There it was: a series of images of the Eiffel Tower, spanning one year of construction from foundation to finished tower. I'd never had any real interest in the Eiffel Tower and didn't know much beyond that it was built for the World's Fair. Yet, the image spoke to me, and I couldn't wait to get it home and hang it up.

It's really an image to contemplate. For me, it symbolizes the journey and stages of becoming tall, strong and even iconic. I see powerful connections between the Eiffel Tower and process:

The Eiffel Tower didn't spring fully formed out of the ground and instantly become a classic symbol of a city. Sometimes, when I'm feeling discouraged or overwhelmed, I forget that everyone started somewhere. It's easy to think that certain people were just born with their PhD and expert status, in demand on several continents. In reality, they started from the ground and built up. There are no "overnight" successes.

The most important growth period happens when it appears that there is little outside progress. In the case of the Eiffel Tower, the longest period of time between two major points of construction was four months, yet that period exhibits the least amount of change. From the photos, it looks as though that's when critical infrastructure was added that created stability and strength for the remaining upward build. I see this same process with clients. While they are being coached, they are doing a lot of internal building of self-esteem and positive self-talk "infrastructure." They are making huge shifts and changes, ones that form the solid foundation for all future growth.

It takes a village to build something that lasts. The Eiffel Tower had 300+ people involved in its construction. It also has 2.5 million rivets holding it together! Just as the tower needed people who believed in it and solid reinforcements to keep it standing, so do we as individuals on our personal journeys. It's not just about networking; it's about forming relationships of mutual support and trust that will stand the test of time. Just as there's no "overnight success," there are no "self-made millionaires" either. Every successful person has a team of supporters, friends, colleagues and mentors. And when one prospers, they all prosper.

People didn't like the Eiffel Tower at first; they may not like you either. Harsh, I know. When the tower was first constructed, it was assailed with criticism from prominent members of the community as well as the general citizenry. People were actually angry and thought it was an eyesore.

Today, of course, we cannot imagine the Parisian skyline without the Eiffel Tower. Attitudes shifted, and its aesthetic and practical significance (as a communication tower) saved it from the plan to demolish it after 20 years. Paris is now celebrating the tower's 120th birthday.

People who succeed in any endeavor often have to persevere through naysayers and wet blankets. They may not like you or your idea. Does that matter? NO. There is plenty of room in your process for people to offer constructive criticism and feedback if it supports your growth. There is no room for those who want to keep you small or who feel threatened. Surround yourself with people who will build you up, not tear you down. Those who built the tower had to withstand insult and injury. They stood by their vision, and c'est magnifique!

5. If you don't do it, then what? You will remain stuck, non successful in some area of your life, and so on. So... you might as well deal with your fear and just do it!
6. Remember, when you fall down, you get back up. Be proactive and success will follow

The Importance of Data Backup

Data backup and data protection is a crucially important element of the IT department, because the information that a company has built up over the years can be critical to the smooth running of a business going forward. There are two major aspects to data protection; one is that the company information getting into the wrong hands and the other major one is losing critical information that is crucial to the running of a business. As more information is being moved electronically in today's world it is all the more important to be able to manage and control the movement of data that belongs to the company. If a business has the budget to implement a data encryption policy it is a very effective way of protecting company information. This is especially so in laptops. We keep hearing in the news on a regular basis about laptop theft in corporate business, unfortunately very often these laptops while password protected do not have any encryption software loaded which makes access to the information relatively easy. We are told by the authorities is very often when laptops are stolen it is mainly by the opportunistic thief where the main intention is just to sell on the hardware to turn a quick buck and it is very rare that laptops are stolen purely for the data. This being the case corporate business should have a policy of making sure that sensitive data is adequately protected especially with the likes of financial institutions or any companies that stores financial data on customers. Because a lot of payments are made via direct debit this automatically means that companies have very sensitive information stored about their customers and very often this information is not adequately protected, simply this is not good enough. Apart from the obligation to protect sensitive information it should never be the case that financial records or medical records are stored on laptops. These days most people have access to a broadband connection which means that even if you're on the move you should be able to dial-in to the company server to access any information required. If this is the case no information should be stored on the C-drive of a laptop by using a server to access and store information means the loss of a laptop only requires hardware replacement and not the loss of any data.

The fact remains that once information is mobile it needs to be protected and the message is that it is possible to protect information even with small budgets by taking small steps to protect company information. Also we are always at risk of our property being stolen, this being the case our data protection policies need to be robust enough to protect our information.

International Financial Reporting Standards are standards and interpretations adopted by the International Accounting Standards Board(IASB).

Many of the standards forming part of International Financial Reporting Standards are known by the older name of International Accounting Standards. London’s Bridges

I do not know under how many bridges of Thames, the heroes of the English writer Jerome K. have passed, "Three in a boat…", but I have numbered at least four of them dating back in those times: Chelsea Bridge, Westminster Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge and Tower Bridge. These, as well as seven more, cross Thames, through all London.

Vauxhall Built

in 1916, this is the first London Bridge on which trams circulated. It is unique because of the bronze figures placed at its endings, figures that represent the Agriculture, the Architecture, the Beautiful Arts, Education and Science. A closed illustration for the creativity of the human kind is the Tate Art Gallery built for the decoration of the bridge. The gallery received the first 65 paintings from a noble of the last century.
